A 60-year-old woman has been charged over an alleged one-day burglary spree at a west Auckland retirement village, and Police are reviewing reports of similar offending at other villages across the region.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ryan Bunting says five charges have been laid so far after incidents in late January in which five residents were allegedly targeted in their homes. Three of those residents reported burglaries, with expensive jewellery and cash taken. Police estimate the value at nearly $8,000.

The woman faces three counts of burglary and two counts of being unlawfully in a building. She is due to appear in the Waitākere District Court today, where Police say they will oppose bail. Further charges cannot be ruled out as enquiries continue.

Bunting urged residents and families to be alert, particularly around access to units. Police advise residents not to let anyone inside unless they are known to them or their identity has been confirmed with village management, to keep an eye out for neighbours, and to keep valuables hidden and secure. Families are encouraged to check in with loved ones and reinforce the same advice.
