Police have arrested two people after separate stabbings unfolded within minutes of each other in Rānui this afternoon.

Officers were first called just before midday to a residential area on Swanson Road after reports of a group disorder. One person was found with non-life-threatening stab wounds. A 23-year-old woman was taken into custody at the scene, and the injured person was taken to a nearby medical centre.

While a detective and frontline staff were with that victim at the centre, a second incident erupted outside. Police say they became aware of a commotion as a person, who had been stabbed in the head, ran for help. Officers saw an alleged offender chasing the victim and, when they moved to intervene, the man allegedly lunged at them with a knife, knocking one officer over and striking his body armour.

The man then ran off and allegedly stabbed a member of the public in the shoulder at a bus stop. The detective sustained grazing injuries; the other officer was not injured. The two victims from the second incident are in hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

A 29-year-old man was arrested nearby by officers already on scene for the earlier incident.

Detective Inspector Callum McNeill said welfare and support are in place for the officers and that current enquiries indicate the two events were separate and isolated.

The 23-year-old woman has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and is due to appear in the Waitakere District on 11 May. The 29-year-old man will appear in the Waitākere District Court tomorrow charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and assault with a weapon.
