Stolen asbestos may be mistaken for pounamu after Panmure burglary, Police warn
A box containing double-bagged asbestos was taken from a Jellicoe Road workplace; Police say anyone who opens it risks exposure and are asking for it to be handed in.
Police are urging whoever took a box from a Panmure business — or anyone who has since been given it — to return it immediately, warning it contains double-bagged asbestos.
The Glen Innes Tactical Crime Unit is investigating the burglary at a work premises on Jellicoe Road, entered overnight between Monday and Tuesday. Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Amanda Reed said the asbestos was sealed and boxed, but if the bag is opened it could put the holder and people nearby at risk.
Police believe the box may have been taken because the bagged material could resemble pounamu. Officers searched several addresses in Point England late yesterday without success.
Anyone who knows where the box is should contact Police on 105 and quote reference 260330/5474. Information can also be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
