Restricted fire season declared for North Waikato from 4pm Thursday
The permit-only rules cover Waikato, Hauraki, Matamata-Piako, Waipa, Ōtorohanga, Waitomo and Hamilton City as vegetation fires rise with late-summer drying.
Fire and Emergency has moved North Waikato to a restricted fire season from 4pm Thursday, 19 March, until further notice, requiring permits for anyone planning to light outdoor fires.
The North Waikato zone covers the Waikato, Hauraki, Matamata-Piako, Waipa, Ōtorohanga and Waitomo district council areas, as well as Hamilton City.
District Manager Daryl Trim said drier late-summer and early-autumn conditions are pushing up fire danger, despite regular rain in recent weeks. He noted an increase in vegetation fires, including several larger incidents, and warned they’re likely to become more frequent.
“A restricted season gives us greater control of who can burn and when, and we can provide direct fire safety advice,” he said, adding the change is aimed at reducing risk to people and property.
Thames-Coromandel remains in a restricted fire season.
People must apply for, and receive, a permit before lighting outdoor fires. Details on what activities are restricted or banned, and how to apply for a permit, are at www.checkitsalright.nz.
