An Emergency Mobile Alert has been issued for a Red Wind Warning covering areas of coastal Clutha, Southland and Stewart Island, with extreme winds expected until around 4pm.

Emergency Management Southland says severe gusts in exposed places could reach 150km/h. The agency warns of danger to life from flying debris and falling trees, and is advising people to stay indoors or seek sturdy shelter away from trees, and to avoid all travel.
