Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr is in the country this week for the first visit by a Palauan head of state, with the trip anchored around preparations for consecutive years of Pacific Islands Forum hosting.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said he looked forward to discussing how the two countries can keep working closely on regional issues as Palau prepares to host the Forum this year and New Zealand takes the turn in 2027. “As consecutive Forum hosts, we want to make the most of the next two years,” he said, adding the Forum is a chance to work with partners to ensure their support reflects priorities set by Pacific countries.

Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro will formally welcome President Whipps at Government House in Auckland on Monday. While here, the President will meet several Cabinet ministers, a range of agencies and businesses, and iwi in both Auckland and Rotorua.

The Government has not detailed specific agenda items or announcements beyond Forum preparations and “key issues facing the region.”
