Eight people have been arrested and drugs, firearms and cash seized after Police executed 12 search warrants across Southland last week under Operation Diablo.

The warrants, carried out at properties and vehicles in and around Invercargill, were led by Southland’s Organised Crime Group and Criminal Investigation Branch, with support from specialist teams including a drug detection dog unit. Police said the operation targeted gang-related drug offending.

Officers seized more than 32 grams of methamphetamine, various quantities of cannabis, firearms and ammunition, more than $3,000 in cash, and multiple electronic devices.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Baird said the operation was focused on reducing harm linked to illicit drug supply and those facilitating it. “We will continue to find and prosecute those who think this sort of criminal activity is acceptable,” he said.

Five men and three women have appeared in the Invercargill District Court on charges including possession for supply of Class A drugs, unlawful possession of a firearm and threatening behaviour.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and further charges or arrests have not been ruled out.

Information about illegal drug supply or criminal activity can be provided to Police on 105, or by calling 111 if it’s happening now. Details can also be shared anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
