Te Oneone Rangatira / Muriwai Beach will be closed to vehicles over the peak holiday period, with Auckland Council and Auckland Transport locking the Coast Road and Wilson Road access points from Wednesday 31 December until Monday 12 January 2026.

The closure blocks vehicle access along the beach, except for emergency response or rescue operations.

Regional Parks Western Principal Ranger Dave Markham said the move is about safety and reducing fire risk during the busiest time of year. He urged visitors to help protect Muriwai’s coastline, wildlife and people, noting the area’s popularity and dry summer conditions.

Muriwai has been vehicle free over the New Year period since 2020, and during Guy Fawkes since 2023. Fireworks, campfires and camping are not permitted anywhere along the coastline.

Access to the beach remains open on foot and on horseback via usual entry points. Gates, barriers, signage and security will be in place at Coast Road and Wilson Road to reinforce the rules.

Police will work with Auckland Council and NZTA to patrol the beach and encourage responsible driving behaviour in the area.

Visitors should plan for no vehicle access to the sand during the closure window.
