A magnitude 5.2 earthquake was recorded at 9.19pm, located 25 kilometres west of Te Araroa at a depth of about 32 kilometres, according to GeoNet.

GeoNet notes that initial parameters can be refined as more data comes in. People who felt the shaking can submit a felt report on the GeoNet website to help improve the assessment.

If you’re in an affected area, expect possible aftershocks. Follow Drop, Cover and Hold during shaking, check on neighbours if safe to do so, and keep an eye on official updates from Civil Defence and GeoNet.
