Four youths are in custody after Police used road spikes to stop a stolen Nissan north of Dunedin, following reports it was involved in petrol drive-offs and dangerous driving.

Police say the vehicle was taken overnight from a home in Caversham. During the day, it was linked to petrol drive-offs at least two Dunedin service stations.

Around 4.40pm, multiple callers reported the Nissan tailgating and braking erratically. Officers located it on North Road and followed at a distance before deploying spikes in Waitati. The car stopped on SH1 north of the city, and four youths were arrested without incident.

The driver will be charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and theft related to the fuel. All four will be referred to Police Youth Aid.
