Flame of Hope to be carried through central Christchurch on Tuesday ahead of Special Olympics Opening Ceremony
Police and Special Olympics athletes will lead a midday torch run from Victoria Square to the Bridge of Remembrance before the Games open at Wolfbrook Arena on Wednesday.
The Flame of Hope will move through central Christchurch at midday on Tuesday, as Police and Special Olympics athletes lead a Law Enforcement Torch Run ahead of the Special Olympics National Summer Games.
Athletes, supporters and Police will gather at Victoria Square from 11:45am on Tuesday 9 December 2025, setting off at 12:00pm. The route runs along Oxford Terrace to the Bridge of Remembrance, with the group expected to finish by 1:00pm. Members of the public are encouraged to come out and cheer on the athletes.
Inspector Rupert Friend said Police were pleased to take part in the torch run to help raise awareness and funds for the Special Olympics movement. “Athletes experience moments of joy, dignity and pride that come with being part of the Special Olympics community, and Police encourage all kiwis to get behind it. Come out and encourage the athletes and teams. Support the Games and be part of something special.”
The Law Enforcement Torch Run began in Northland on 4 October and has travelled the length of the country to arrive in Christchurch the day before the Games begin. Police run alongside Special Olympics athletes to promote respect, inclusion and human dignity for people with intellectual disabilities through sport.
The Opening Ceremony for the Special Olympics NZ National Summer Games will be held at Wolfbrook Arena, Jack Hinton Drive, at 4:00pm on Wednesday 10 December 2025. More than 1,200 athletes from around the country have qualified to compete at the highest national level, with the Games running at Wolfbrook Arena from 10–14 December.
“Lighting the Flame of Hope means that the games are just around the corner,” Special Olympics Chief Executive Fran Scholey said.
