Five rescued near Middlemarch after setting out in snow and gale-force winds
The group of young adults called for help from patchy-coverage country; police urge trampers to carry proper gear and a PLB.
Police are urging people to prepare properly for spring conditions after five young adults were rescued near Middlemarch last night.
The group set off late in the afternoon for a hut despite snow, rain and gale-force winds in the area. They became lost, but managed to get cellphone reception about 7.30pm and called for help. Police Search and Rescue, assisted by local farmers, reached the group and walked them out.
“The group was not prepared for the conditions,” Senior Sergeant Blair Dalton said. “They did not have adequate clothing or supplies, and they were not experienced trampers.” He said they were fortunate to find reception in an area known for patchy coverage.
Dalton said the incident is a reminder that spring weather can still be cold and inhospitable, and that basic safety steps matter every time you head into the hills. Police advise:
- Take adequate clothing, food and emergency shelter.
- Carry two forms of communication, ideally including a Personal Locator Beacon.
- Plan your trip and tell someone your intentions and return time.
- Check the forecast, and if the weather looks poor, don’t go.
Police did not provide details on injuries. The group was able to walk out with rescuers. Dalton said the goal is simple: head out prepared, and come home safely.
