Police say a long-running investigation into a syndicate using dark‑web markets has led to 11 arrests and seizures of drugs, cash and firearms following raids across Auckland and Hamilton.

Operation Solana, run by the National Organised Crime Group over the past nine months, focused on a group allegedly importing methamphetamine, cocaine, MDMA and ketamine and distributing them nationwide. Investigators say the operation relied on anonymous online marketplaces, encrypted messaging and cryptocurrency to hide identities and money flows.

Sixteen search warrants were executed on Thursday and Friday. Police seized methamphetamine, cocaine, MDMA and ketamine, about $500,000 in cash, and three firearms — one of them 3D‑printed. Police did not detail the quantities of drugs found in New Zealand during the warrants.

Customs and overseas agencies in the United States, Australia and Europe have intercepted more than 200 kilograms of controlled drugs at their borders that Police say were destined for this syndicate. The drugs were being shipped from the United Kingdom, Europe and the US.

Those arrested — 11 people aged 24 to 42 — are due in the Auckland and Hamilton District Courts today. Charges include importation, possession and supply of class A, B and C drugs, unlawful possession of firearms, and participating in an organised criminal group.

Detective Senior Sergeant Jason Hunt said offending on the dark web is “not invisible” and that Police are increasingly equipped to identify and dismantle criminal enterprises operating behind encryption. He said the operation had established the group allegedly imported and distributed controlled drugs across the country.

Police say they will continue to target individuals and networks using digital platforms for drug offending.
